Lemosho Gate
Elevation: 2,100 meters above sea level
Lemosho Gate, also called the Lemosho Glades trailhead, marks the start of the Lemosho Route up Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s one of the ways into the park for climbers. Before you can begin, you first stop at Londorossi Gate to sign in, then drive to Lemosho Gate where the climb really begins. At the gate, they check a few things to make sure you’re set. They look at your passport or visa, go over your plan for each day on the mountain, confirm your guide is with a proper tour company, and ensure you’ve got enough supplies like porters, tents, food, and water. They also make sure the park fees are paid. If anything’s missing, they might not let you start.
There’s a sign at Lemosho Gate showing the height, distance, and names of the campsites you’ll hit along your route. It’s also where you meet your porters and can do any last-minute checks before heading out. The Ranger’s office and toilets are about 300 meters back the way you came, roughly 984 feet away.
Location & Weather
Lemosho Gate is on the northwestern side of Kilimanjaro, at the base of the mountain’s slopes. It’s in a quiet, out-of-the-way area called Lemosho, surrounded by plantations. The first campsite, Mti Mkubwa, is about 7 kilometers away, and you reach it right after leaving the gate.
Getting to Lemosho Gate can be tricky because the area gets a lot of rain, thanks to its height and closeness to the montane forest. The roads turn rough and muddy, especially during wet months. A tough 4×4 vehicle or jeep is the best way to make it through, as regular cars might get stuck when the weather’s bad.
What it’s like on Lemosho
On both the 7-day and 8-day Lemosho treks, your journey starts with a 4-hour drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. There, you handle the entry paperwork. Then it’s another hour by car to the Lemosho trailhead.
When you arrive, you have lunch before setting off through a peaceful forest. The walk to Mti Mkubwa Camp is 6 kilometers and takes about 3 to 4 hours, climbing from 7,800 feet to 9,500 feet in the rainforest. The path twists through tall trees, giving you a calm start to the adventure.
Lemosho Gate is a rainy, green doorway to Kilimanjaro—a simple spot where you take your first steps toward the summit.
