Mweka Gate

Elevation: 1,640 meters above sea level

Mweka Gate, Used by climbers who have summited using the Lemosho Route is the way out for climbers coming down Mount Kilimanjaro using the Mweka Route. It’s only for leaving the mountain, not for going up, and it’s used by more than half of Kilimanjaro’s routes, like Lemosho, Shira, Umbwe, Machame, and the Northern Circuit. When you get there, park officials have offices where they check climbers out. They look at your passport or visa, go over your daily plan from the climb, make sure your guide is from a real tour company, check if you had enough supplies like porters, tents, food, and water, and confirm you paid the park fees. If something’s not right, they might not let you through.

The area around Mweka Gate is part of the rainforest zone on Kilimanjaro. It’s green and damp, with thick trees and plants all around. Most people who use this gate are coming down from either Millennium Camp or Mweka Hut, depending on their route.

Location & Weather

Mweka Gate is on the southern edge of the mountain, near the Uru West ward in the Moshi rural district. It’s a quiet, countryside spot with a few houses spread out nearby. The land is lush, and the road to Mweka is lined with coffee farms. It’s close to Moshi town, where you can find hotels and offices easily, though big stores are harder to come by—smaller shops are around instead.

What it’s like on Lemosho

On both the 7-day and 8-day Lemosho treks, Mweka Gate is your final stop after coming down from Mweka Camp. You start the day with breakfast at the camp, then walk down to the gate. The trip is about 10 kilometers and takes 3 to 4 hours, dropping from 10,000 feet to 5,400 feet through the rainforest. The path can get wet and muddy lower down, so trekking poles and gaiters come in handy. It’s warm enough for shorts and t-shirts, but keeping rain gear and a jacket nearby is smart. At the gate, you get your summit certificate as a reward for reaching the top. From there, it’s another hour’s walk to Mweka Village, where a car waits to take you back to a hotel in Moshi.
Mweka Gate is a green, rainy finish line—a simple spot where your Kilimanjaro adventure ends and you head back to town.
